It’s no secret that we all love everything to do with Harry Potter, so it’s no surprise that we Harry Potter fans come up with hundreds of questions about the stories and the wizarding world as a whole. Here are just 10 of the countless questions we’ve probably all contemplated.

  1. Where are Harry’s grandparents?
We know that James’ parents were older when they had him, but what about Lily’s parents? Did they die of natural causes or were they killed? It always seemed odd that Harry had to be with his aunt and uncle rather than either set of grandparents, but then again, he wouldn’t have ended up the same person if it weren’t for his experience with the Dursleys.
  1. Did Tom Riddle ever have a girlfriend?
It’s probably unlikely that Tom Riddle ever truly liked a girl (or boy) because of his extreme narcissism, but it’s still an interesting question to ponder all the same.
  1. What kind of government is the British Ministry of Magic?
It’s hard to discern exactly what kind of government the British Ministry of Magic is. It certainly seems organized differently than any muggle government.
  1. How is the Minister of Magic chosen?
The books don’t go into too much detail about how the Minister of Magic is chosen. Dumbledore was offered the post several times and refused, which makes us wonder exactly how the Minister is chosen.
  1. What happens when a dementor sucks out your soul?
In the books, a dementor’s kiss is described as “worse than death,” but not many details are given about what happens to the victims. Do they become like animals with just pure instinct or do they even have instincts at all?
  1. What happens when a wizard falls in love with a muggle?
Obviously, some wizards oppose the intermarriage of wizards and muggles, but on a purely legal standpoint we aren’t given the protocol for intermarriage. The international statute of secrecy requires that wizards/witches conceal their magical identities from muggles. We’re not told when it is acceptable for a wizard/witch to tell their muggle partner their true identity.
  1. Does the wizarding world have a cure for cancer?
St. Mungo’s can treat all varieties of magical illnesses and issues, but muggle diseases aren’t mentioned much. One of the most prominent medical concerns in the muggle world is cancer, so it’s natural to wonder if wizards/witches ever get cancer. If so, do they have a cure or treatment and what is it?
  1. Where does Fawkes go when he leaves the grounds of Hogwarts after Dumbledore’s death?
It doesn’t seem likely that Fawkes would have gone on with Dumbledore simply because phoenixes are reborn from their ashes, but many of us have wondered where Fawkes went after Dumbledore’s death.
  1. How do wizarding children learn to read?
We’re not told how wizarding children learn the basics before they attend Hogwarts. The most logical explanation would be that their parents teach them.
  1. Are wizards/witches religious?
Churches are mentioned a few times in the books, most notably when Harry and Hermione visit Godric’s Hollow on Christmas Eve. However, we’re never told if witches and wizards ever attend church or if they are religious in any way.
